Health and CrisisTransformations of Care: Physical, Social and Functional Changes in the Hospital following the Fukushima Triple Disaster

This qualitative project seeks to understanding the impact of 2011 Fukushima Triple Disaster upon medical institutions and medical practice in the period following the event. The research is led by PI Dr. Sudeepa Abeysinghe in collaboration with medical professionals in Fukushima – Dr Masaharu Tsubokura (Fukushima Medical University), Dr. Akihiko Ozaki (Omachi Hospital, Minamisoma, and Teikyo University) and Dr. Mariko Morita (Minamisoma Municipal General Hospital) – and GHPU PhD candidate Claire Leppold. This research is supported by funding from the Wellcome Trust.

The first paper from this research was published in Social Science and Medicine, and examines the experiences of medical staff working in Japan following the Triple Disaster. The published article can found here.

This project is part of a deeper collaboration with medical professionals in Fukushima, which has included collaboration on several projects related to disaster and health, and the delivery of qualitative research training (with Dr. Sarah Hill, supported by a Butterfield Grant).
